Open letter to the Peterborough Examiner

It was refreshing to read a balanced and positive perspective in the Peterborough
Examiner this weekend, calling for civility in the discussions surrounding the
redevelopment of Bonnerworth Park into a multifaceted recreation area. The proposal,
which includes pickleball courts, skateboarding facilities, bike pump tracks, and green
spaces, represents an exciting opportunity for the Peterborough community. After
months of negativity and heated opposition, it’s heartening to see a call for respectful
dialogue.

That said, it is disheartening to hear recent reports of vandalism and disrespect at the
construction site. These actions not only increase costs for taxpayers—who must fund
additional security measures like cameras and legal fees—but also undermine the
broader community’s opportunity to enjoy this new space.

The Peterborough Pickleball Association (PPA) has largely refrained from engaging in
the heated debates. Instead, we have focused on fostering a welcoming, inclusive
community for players of all ages and skill levels. Now that construction is underway, we
are optimistic about the future of Bonnerworth Park and the recreational opportunities it
will provide. We commend the Mayor and Council for their efforts to create a space that
offers something for everyone. We believe that Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing
sports in North America, exemplifies the spirit of community. In Peterborough, demand
for courts continues to rise, with players regularly lining up for their turn, chatting, and
building friendships while they wait. This reflects not only the sport’s popularity but also
the vibrant community it fosters.

Furthermore, communities across Canada are recognizing the need for facilities to
accommodate pickleball’s growth. By embracing this trend, Peterborough is positioning
itself as a leader in providing recreational spaces that enhance community well-being
and connectivity. Bonnerworth’s redevelopment is more than a construction project; it’s
an investment in the physical and social health of our city.

Thank you for printing all perspectives on this important initiative. We look forward to
seeing this beautiful park come to fruition and thank those who have supported its
development. Together, we can make Bonnerworth a place of recreation, connection,
and pride for all residents
