Steve Mayhew Summer Smash

There were a number of tournaments over the summer for local pickleball athletes to compete. Two highlights were the Steve Mayhew Summer Smash held here in Peterborough and the Canadian National Pickleball championship held in Bedford, Nova Scotia.

“It was a fantastic tournament honouring the memory of Steve Mayhew and featuring many
top local and out of town athletes,” said Shelley Moloney, President, Peterborough Pickleball
Association. “Pickleball is a sport that drives tourism, drives economic value and drives
interest from people wanting to play. Pickleball players from outside our community came
here, stayed in our hotels, and spent money at our local businesses, restaurants, and tourist
attractions. We are thrilled that our event can help contribute to the success of our whole
community.”

Canadian National Pickleball Championship

There were 32 medals won by our local Peterborough people. 11 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze.

Twenty-four local athletes competed with 818 top pickleball players for top honours
in Canada at the Myoflex National Pickleball Championship held in Bedford Nova Scotia this past August. Athletes had the opportunity to compete in up to five events over five days –
at the spectacular Atlantic Tennis and Pickleball Centre.
There were open and age events in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles split into 3.5 and
below and 4.0 and above, as well as Skill/Age Singles and Skill/Age Men’s, Women’s and
Mixed Doubles.

Peterborough competed proudly bringing home a total of 27 medals from the tournament.
