The Peterborough Pickleball Association was proud to host the Third Annual Steve Mayhew Tournament on July 25 and 26 at Bonnerworth Park. The event was a tremendous success: two days of competitive play, sportsmanship, and community spirit. The weather was excellent. We had lots of enthusiastic volunteers, generous sponsors including a generous gold-level sponsorship from Arbor Memorial, and strong participation in all divisions. The tournament showcased both the continued growth of pickleball in Peterborough and the outstanding new facilities at Bonnerworth Park. Congratulations to all participants, medal winners, volunteers, and organizers who helped make the weekend such a memorable event. A list of all the medal winners can be found on our home page.
The PPA will make a donation on Steve’s family’s behalf to the Warkworth Correctional Facility sports division, where Steve was a long-time employee.
The tournament also highlighted the positive impact of the new Bonnerworth courts, which have quickly become a hub for recreation and community engagement. The Peterborough Pickleball Association is grateful for the support of the City of Peterborough, sponsors, and volunteers who continue to help grow the sport and create opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels.
Following the tournament, the Bonnerworth pickleball courts were closed on Monday, July 27, as part of a planned operational decision by the City of Peterborough. The closure allowed City staff to conduct preventative maintenance, inspect the courts and netting, and monitor for any warranty-related work during the facility’s first year of operation. While some confusion arose regarding the closure, the City has indicated that improved signage will be used in the future whenever the courts are closed outside of their regular schedule. The City has also advised that it will review the operational requirements of the facility following this season as it continues to evaluate the needs of this highly utilized community asset.
The Peterborough Pickleball Association is excited about the future of pickleball in Peterborough, and we look forward to welcoming players back to the courts for leagues, programs, open play, and the inaugural Super Senior Slam Tournament later this season.
